The following is a press release announcing the sponsored Nordic walk that took place on 9th of July in aid of Diabetes UK.

You may have seen them in Valley Gardens — groups of people striding around with long poles that seem more suited to ski slopes. These are Nordic Walkers.

Carl Niblett and Lynne Moore are two of the Valley Gardens Nordic Walkers. They joined a ‘Learn Nordic Walking’ 4 week course at Yorkshire Yoga, Knaresborough in January and they haven’t looked back since.

Lynne suffers from diabetes, and has obtained such great health benefits that she is now enthusiastically planning a sponsored Nordic Walk in aid of the charity Diabetes UK on Saturday, 9th of July at 10 AM.

‘We hope to increase awareness of diabetes and how healthy programs like Nordic Walking can improve the lives of sufferers,’ explains Lynne, ‘as well as raising large amounts of money for the charity to support research into the condition, and explore new treatment therapies’.

Lynne is hoping that sponsored Nordic Walkers will want to commit to 10,000 steps on the day (about 5 miles) as a way to spread the Department of Health message that people should be walking 10,000 steps each and every day.

If 10,000 steps seem overwhelming, there is a 2,000 step option on the 9th of July, when Nordic Walking UK instructors will do an initial Basic Techniques Taster Session before guiding you in your 2,000 step walk (about 1 mile).

Nordic walking poles for the Sponsored Event are being borrowed from Knaresborough charity Yorkshire Yoga and also from City of York Council which is also running a Learn Nordic Walking programme.
